Workshop with Senegal Authority for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety: “Regulatory Oversight of Nuclear Medicine Facilities”

Published on February 22, 2025

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) delivered a workshop on the regulatory oversight of nuclear medicine facilities to the Senegal Authority for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (ARSN). The weeklong workshop from February 17-21, 2025, included presentations and discussions on regulatory considerations for the possession and safe use of radioactive material, including the processes for extracting and compounding radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic treatment of various cancers.

At the time of the workshop, ARSN had licensed one hospital-based nuclear medicine department and was reviewing an application for a second hospital to establish its own nuclear medicine department. The workshop included visits to both facilities to explore the real-world application of concepts and observe operations, with opportunities for discussion with facility staff and RSRP’s instructor.
