September 8th, 2019 —

On September 5, 6 and 7, 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) Office of International Programs (OIP), and the USNRC Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mugeh Afshar-Tous and Haimanot Yilma of USNRC and John Kinneman of AdSTM, Inc. met with the Director General and other officials from the Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority (ERPA) to discuss the status of the national regulatory program for radiation sources, and ERPA participation in NRC partnership programs. Presentations on the NRC’s international program including the RSRP and the International Regulatory Development Partnership (IRDP) were followed by presentations on the current activities of ERPA. Future collaboration, including support for improvement in the inventory of radiation sources, various training activities and assistance with the development of regulatory products, was discussed and a draft Action Plan was prepared for consideration by both organizations. Following the discussions several participants visited a facility authorized to use large radiation sources and observed the safety and security features at the facility.
