RSRP visits ANRS

July 19th, 2018 —

On July 18, 2018, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), AdSTM, and the Georgian Agency for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (ANRS) met to discuss the recommendations from a February 2018 Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission to Georgia. The principle topics discussed included: updating the 2012 Main Nuclear Law, updating authorization and inspection processes to implement a graded approach for oversight of radioactive material facilities, human capital development including implementation of a training program for regulatory staff, and the development of a system for managing regulatory activities. Given the significant amount of work to accomplish, the NRC and ANRS agreed to develop a nuclear safety development plan for 2018-2020. The plan will contain a prioritized scope of work along with a schedule and strategy to implement the objectives. The plan will be used by the ANRS to address the IRRS mission recommendations in a timely fashion and to coordinate support from donor organizations, including the NRC.
