U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Visits Islamic Republic of Mauritania, National Radiation Protection Authority, Nuclear Safety and Security

February 22nd, 2023 —

On February 21 and 22, 2023, the NRC made its first ever in-person visit to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, when the NRC’s International Assistance Program and Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) went to Nouakchott to meet with the National Radiation Protection Authority, Nuclear Safety and Security (ARSN), a long-term partner of the Assistance Program. NRC contractors involved in RSRP have made several visits, but this trip was an important opportunity for NRC staff to show direct support for ARSN and have face-to-face meetings with regulatory staff. In addition to reviewing current interests and past and potential future ARSN projects, the delegation discussed ARSN’s active leadership in the Forum of Authorities in Charge of Nuclear Safety and Security in the G5 Sahel and Senegal (FASSN). The trip also included visits to the Mauritanian Ministry of Mines, the National Police Force in the Ministry of the Interior, and the Ministry of Health.
