U.S. NRC Participates in The 15th Steering Committee Meeting of The Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA))

February 22nd, 2020 —

From February 19-21, 2020, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) attended the 15th Steering Committee Meeting of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA). This activity was held at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. The U.S. NRC provides important financial support to the FNRBA. The work of the NRC’s Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) program in Africa was presented to the IAEA and the 11 African countries attending the meeting.  This presentation generated significant interest for immediate partnership by those countries that do not currently participate in the RSRP. During the meeting, participants discussed the details of the FNRBA program for the next two years (2020-2021) and identified priorities for the Africa region. FNRBA leadership highlighted U.S. NRC support and encouraged the U.S. NRC to strengthen this valuable cooperation.

The U.S. NRC representative held substantive discussions with the FNRBA representatives, current RSRP partners, and potential new partner countries on ways to achieve regulatory progress with the support of the RSRP.
