From October 1-2, 2026, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) conducted a virtual workshop on Uranium Recovery Regulation. The two-day workshop brought together representatives from the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR) and OCP Group/Uranext, which are involved in phosphate mining and uranium-related activities, and Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (MTEDD). The virtual program provided participants with an opportunity to exchange information and examine NRC regulatory approaches and practices relevant to the oversight of uranium recovery activities.
The workshop covered a range of topics related to the U.S. regulatory framework, including regulatory law and requirements, administrative procedures, and public involvement processes. The information and regulatory experience shared during the workshop will support participants in developing a deeper understanding of the regulatory approaches applied to uranium recovery activities. Moreover, the event also served as an overview of the detailed information that will be presented to AMSSNuR and others during a full four-day on-site Uranium Recovery Workshop to be held in Rabat, Morocco in November 2026.
