From July 27-31, 2026, the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) hosted a five-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya focused on the Advanced Regulatory Information System (xARIS), organized under the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership. The workshop was conducted by Advanced Systems Technology and Management, Inc. expert Grigol Basilia. The workshop provided instruction on the installation and use of xARIS to support KNRA’ national digital registry under the country-wide inventory project. Participants also received hands-on training on the system's core regulatory modules, including radiation source management, licensing, inspections, occupational dose monitoring, radiation event reporting, database management and user administration.
A key outcome of the workshop was the identification of priority actions to support the effective implementation and long-term use of xARIS. It was recommended that KNRA undertake a comprehensive verification of its existing inventory of radiation sources. The inventory is currently maintained in Excel files and has not been comprehensively updated for several years. Ensuring that the data is accurate and up to date will provide an important foundation for the effective use of xARIS.
The workshop participants gained experience in using different xARIS modules and explored how to work together to support day-to-day regulatory activities.
