RSRP Workhop on Design and Shielding Calculation in Medical Radiological Facilities to AEC in Uganda

September 18th, 2016 —

The RSRP held a one-week workshop was conducted in Kampala, Uganda, from September 19-23, 2016, discussing Design and Shielding Calculation in Medical Radiological Facilities. This is part of the undergoing collaboration with the Uganda Atomic Energy Council (AEC) aiming to strengthen Radiation Protection in the country. During the workshop, several medical imaging and therapeutic modalities were discussed in detail for purposes of shielding calculation and design optimization, with special focus on Cobalt Radiotherapy units. The reference literature for the workshop are the documents NCRP145, NCRP147 and NCRP151. Software and other computer tools were provided to the participants to support the shielding calculation process. The activity focused on the development of many practical examples by the participants and supervised by the instructors. At the end of the workshop, the participants demonstrated the new acquired knowledge through a test that covered all developed topics. The AEC expressed their satisfaction for this activity that provided up-to-date knowledge on shielding design.
