Interventional Radiology – Regulatory Inspection and Licensing

Purpose: 

Provide regulatory staff with technical and safety information, typical regulatory requirements and inspection and licensing techniques for managing the regulatory aspects of modern interventional radiology practices.

Scope: 

The course begins with a review of the history and development of the techniques, international requirements and x-ray technology associated with Interventional Radiology. Facility design including shielding are covered followed by a survey of the techniques applied to patients with discussion of why these are appropriate. Expected radiation doses and dose monitoring and reduction approaches are reviewed. Licensing and inspection considerations are presented and a visit to an under construction or operational facility is included when possible. Demonstrations of important licensing and inspection activities and the operation of equipment occur during the visit. There is a related course, Introduction to Diagnostic X-Ray units which covers the physics of the operation and regulation of diagnostic x-ray units.
