From January 28 through February 1, 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) visited the National Authority of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (ARSN) in Nouakchott, Mauritania. On behalf of the NRC/RSRP, Rick Muñoz met with IRSN regulatory staff to provide information and guidance with the objective of strengthening their understanding for regulatory requirements related to licensing and inspection of industrial radiographic operations. During the consultancy, Mr. Muñoz discussed NRC enforcement procedures and industrial radiography conducted on oil and gas exploration platforms and related to well logging operations. A number of recommendations were provided to improve and further develop the ARSN regulatory program related with the development of industrial radiography regulations, licensing reviews, and performance-based inspection procedures.
